Capital of Amazonas turns 355 years old

With its impressive architecture and stunning natural beauty, Manaus turns 355 on October 24th. The capital of Amazonas is among the oldest cities in Brazil, located in the heart of the largest tropical forest in the world. Manaus is an influential city in the western region of Brazil and has a significant impact on commerce, education, finance, industry, media, research, military power, technology, and entertainment throughout the region, earning the title of a regional metropolis.

Also known as the "Paris of the Tropics" or the "Metropolis of the Amazon," the city’s history is linked to the Portuguese presence in the Amazon region. Manaus was established in the 17th century around the São José do Rio Negro Fort, a fortress built by the Portuguese at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers to control access to the westernmost part of the Amazon and to demonstrate Portuguese dominance in the area.

As the main tourist destination in the Amazon, Manaus is surrounded by unparalleled biodiversity. The city’s history is also tied to the rubber boom, and it is considered one of the 30 best cities for doing business in Latin America. Its population is a blend of Portuguese, Northeastern Brazilian, and Indigenous cultures, giving it a distinct character.

Manaus is also home to the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA), the most important center for scientific studies on the Amazon biome and international sustainability issues. The beautiful Amazon Theatre, a National Historical Heritage site, is also located in the capital of Amazonas.
